I think you have this notion in your mind that doing it that way is "jerry rigging", but it doesn't have much of a logical basis to it. I think you are falling victim to FUD (fear, uncertainty, and doubt). You dislike something and look down upon it because you don't fully understand it. I am looking at it in a more logical sense. If the injector driver circuit had the resistor placed on the PCB before it left the box and went out onto the wiring harness then I think you wouldn't call that jerry rigging. But since he placed the resistor near the injector you don't like it. To the circuit it doesn't make a difference. Some people just don't know the inner workings of things and are afraid to get into the nitty gritty details... they look down upon that which isn't a shiny finished product ready for the end user. Others like Ash aren't content with being an end user, they like to know how something works so they can learn how to manipulate it. This "end user" mentality is too prevalent in the import world, especially with Z's and Supra's. These people don't know how a part works, they don't know how to put it on their car, they only know what they hear from others or see on the box.
